Most areas of the country have sand and gravel quarries that will sell direct to homeowners. The landscape contractors get their soil, rock and boulders from the same source. By the time it is delivered to their site, they have to mark up the cost to make a profit. They then charge you a delivery fee to your home, hence the cost can be quite a bit higher. Avoid all of that and make your purchase at the source. The money saved can be put into plants or other landscape features.
